It’s like they never said goodbye. Watching Beyonce, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams perform during the Super Bowl halftime show brought back serious Destiny’s Child memories for fans of the former pop music threesome. Hot on the heels of their new single “Nuclear,” Williams is continuing in the national touring production of “FELA!,” based on the life of the iconic musician Fela Kuti, father of the Afrobeat music movement. Williams stars as Sandra Isadore, the fiercely independent activist and Kuti’s love interest. A native of Rockford, Ill., Williams talked to the Sun-Times about music, her love of the theater, and chocolate chip pancakes.

Tony Award Winning Fela! the musical returns to Chicago and this time Destiny’s Child’s Michelle Williams is along for the ride. Produced by Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter and Jada Pinkett Smith, Fela! follows the life of Nigerian singer Fela Kuti, who battled AIDS and government soldiers while performing at a nightclub called The Shrine in Lagos. Bill T. Jones wrote the book and choreographed the show that was nominated for eleven Tony Awards the year it debuted Off-Broadway.

The Chicago Defender: Michelle Williams comes home to star in Fela!
The critically acclaimed Broadway musical, Fela!, makes its return to Chicago for six performances at the Arie Crown Theatre this month. After debuting in 2008, the theatrical production has won three Tony Awards and been seen by huge audiences including First Lady Michelle Obama.
