Michelle Williams, of Destiny’s Child, ‘honored’ to be a part of musical ‘Fela!’
Michelle Williams, one part of the famous trio Destiny’s Child, got hooked on Fela Kuti’s music a few years ago. “I became a fan maybe five or six years ago,” she said. Kuti, a Nigerian composer and activist, who created his own type of music, Afrobeat — a style of music in which he mixed pounding eclectic rhythms with strong political lyrics — became something of a fascination for Williams. “He politicized his music. He knew something was wrong, that his country corrupt. So he put that into his music.”

Jan. 23, 2013. A long mirrored rehearsal room in midtown Manhattan, the floorboards gleaming but the corners piled high with walking shoes, backpacks, cellphones and scarves.
